SPACS Performance Testing – Precision Physiology for Peak Performance
At SPACS, we specialize in bridging the gap between high-level physiological diagnostics and real-world training application. We work with athletes and coaches at every stage of athletic development—from Olympic medal contenders to enthusiastic amateurs—helping translate advanced physiological data into actionable training strategies.
More Than Just Numbers — Diagnostics That Inform Performance
Our protocols are not checklists. Each result is a current, data-driven snapshot of an athlete’s physiology, enabling precise adjustments to training load, volume and intensity.
High VO₂max but underperforming? We look for physiological bottlenecks limiting the use of metabolic potential and provide clear, targeted recommendations to address specific weaknesses.

What Makes Our Testing Unique?
Alongside standard endurance metrics, we are one of the few centers in Europe using real-time NIRS to measure muscle oxygenation (SmO₂) in sport-specific muscles.
We analyze oxygen transport & utilization during work and recovery. Pulmonary function (spirometry, capnometry) highlights respiratory efficiency and guides corrective interventions when needed.
Why Is Muscle Oxygenation Critical?
Oxygen travels from alveoli to blood, binds to hemoglobin, reaches working muscles and enters mitochondria to support aerobic energy production.
When the pathway runs efficiently, performance peaks. When disrupted, even elite athletes suffer. With NIRS we non-invasively track SmO₂ dynamics in activity, rest and recovery. We also assess CO₂ tolerance, vital for sustaining high intensities.

When Should You Get Tested?
With SPACS, testing fits nearly any training phase. Our physiologists come to your location to capture data in real training or race conditions.
- Pre-competition: readiness check and taper planning.
- Start of a new block: establish a baseline.
- Post-injury/illness: safe, informed reintegration.
- Unexpected underperformance: identify physiological causes.
- Before “A” race: mesocycle validation.
The Power of Repeatable Testing
The first test sets the baseline and reveals limiting systems; follow-ups show adaptations vs. non-response, letting you refine training with precision.

What’s in the SPACS Diagnostic Report?
Our report covers 30+ performance variables directly tied to training decisions.
1) Resting Metabolism & Energy Expenditure (Indirect Calorimetry – BMR / RMR)
- Substrate usage at rest & during exercise.
- Total daily energy expenditure.
- HRrest & HRV.
2) CPET – Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (Lab or Field)
- VO₂max, VT1, VT2, AT; RER kinetics; FATmax/FATmin.
- Training zones: HR, VO₂, RF, TV, EQO₂, Ve; FeO₂ reserve.
- CBT (core temperature) & SmO₂ (muscle oxygenation).
- Lactate (LT1/LT2) & caloric needs per zone/race pace.
- CP / FTP and ventilatory efficiency (spirometry & capnometry).
- Actionable training recommendations.
How It Works
- 1Consultation & scope: goals, sport context, constraints.
- 2Protocol design: lab or field, devices, variables.
- 3Data collection: under real training/race conditions where possible.
- 4Analysis: oxygen transport/utilization, ventilatory efficiency, thermoregulation.
- 5Reporting: thresholds, zones, limiting systems, fueling.
- 6Recommendations: targeted training & habit changes.
- 7Re-test: verify adaptations; adjust plan.
